ARC Grant Ornatas and IMAS

Ornatas and the University of Tasmania proudly receive Federal Government support for the world’s first lobster aquaculture industry.

A $26 million dollar project has been approved by the ARC, supporting the development of a new lobster aquaculture industry. Ornatas are industry partners in this project, commercialising the Spiny Lobster breeding technology developed by the University.

The funding will support Ornatas investment in the world’s first hatchery by developing sustainable onshore aquaculture systems, innovative feeds, transport solutions, and novel tools to manage seedstock quality.

Ornatas, is a proud investor in this grant, matching the Federal Government’s $5 million contribution. The recognition by the federal government to support this grant reinforces our focus to invest in Tasmania, and Queensland regional areas.

Assistant Minister for Forestry and Fisheries Jonathon Duniam said “This could not only transform aquaculture for lobsters, this work has the potential to benefit other species and meet the growing demand for premium seafood.”

The vision is to build a new future for the industry, to drive jobs in regional communities, and create a new sustainable and socially responsible aquaculture industry.
