Meet Anna Overweter! Anna is our Rock Lobster hatchery manager, based in Tasmania. Anna oversees the commercialisation of the rock lobster hatchery technology that has been developed at UTAS over the last few decades. Anna’s daily role at Ornatas involves an extensive range of planning and system design, and she will also be turning her attention to developing the site at Toomulla beach as well as the Tasmanian Hatchery.
Anna grew up in Launceston and spent many family holidays on the north east coast of Tasmania, spending her childhood fishing and diving. This is where Anna’s interest in the marine environment and later aquaculture was first born.
Anna’s experience in the aquaculture industry began with her studies at UTAS and graduating with a position in the salmon farming industry. Later Anna returned to her studies to undertake an honours program with a focus on research. For 8 years Anna was heavily involved with UTAS as a live feed technician, which later resulted in becoming the hatchery manager for rock lobster. This has allowed Anna the opportunity to operate hatcheries for a range of species, through the extensive research and development of technology for rock lobster aquaculture. Anna will use this experience to drive commercialisation of these lobster species, through developing commercial scale systems, feed manufacturing and water treatment systems, to ensure the transfer of technology from research to commercial is realised.
Anna loves the challenge of working with species that are inherently hard to grow! Her role is diverse and is always allowing her to learn something new. It is a great team environment to be part of as everyone has such a diverse range of skills to learn from. Anna is excited to be part if Ornatas’ vision, drive and capacity to see lobster aquaculture become the new industry in Australia.
